Taking the bus home with your shopping bags

Carrying a full week of shopping on the bus can feel like a balancing act. The bags swing, the seats are narrow, and the bus lurches just as you reach for a handrail. With a little forethought, though, it becomes perfectly manageable, and you may find that it is less stressful than searching for a parking space at the supermarket.

Start with the bags themselves. Strong bags with two sturdy handles are far better than flimsy carrier bags that split at the worst moment. A rucksack on your back leaves both hands free, and a bag with a zip keeps everything inside when the bus tips. If you have several bags, try to divide the weight evenly, so that you are not leaning to one side as you walk to the stop.

Packing for the journey

Put heavy tins, bottles and jars at the bottom, and place bread, eggs and soft fruit on top. Keep chilled items together, ideally in an insulated bag, so that they stay cool on the way home. When the bus is busy, keep your bags close and low. Avoid leaving them in the middle of the walkway, where other passengers might trip over them. If you have to stand, hold a rail firmly with one hand and keep the bags pressed against your legs. It is much easier to steady yourself when your load is not swinging from your arm as the bus pulls away.

Think about the timing of your trip. Shopping in the middle of the morning or early afternoon often means a quieter bus and shorter queues at the till. During the rush hour, buses fill up quickly, and finding room for bags can be a struggle. If you must travel at a busy time, take fewer items and consider making two smaller trips instead of one big one.

Finally, allow yourself a little extra time at both ends of the journey. The walk from the stop to your front door is often the hardest part, especially with heavy bags. A folding shopping trolley or a small set of wheels can help with that last stretch. With practice, the bus becomes a comfortable way to bring the shopping home, and the car can stay on the drive.
